The Insight
As the bag-snatching capital of Europe, tourists in Barcelona have long been subject to petty theft. However, these crimes are becoming increasingly violent. Within the first 6 months of 2019, there were 7,423 robberies that involved violence or intimidation.
Tourists are more vulnerable to crimes simply because they lack the social know-how – and when it results in violence, young girls travelling alone or in small groups are particularly vulnerable as ‘easier targets’.
Everyone has a social and cultural understanding of where they live. What if these local insights could be brought to the attention of tourists to make them safer & less exposed to risk?
Doing together what can’t be done alone.
The Outcome
StepSavvy, in partnership with Barcelona Turisme, wants tourists to see Barcelona like a local – safely.
Local knowledge is brought to tourists via the StepSavvy app, guiding them around Barcelona in the safest possible way. Digital app features – such as recommended places to go and generated safe routes – communicate with environmental features to help tourists always stay savvy.
Aiming to unite tourists with locals, StepSavvy utilises an icon that transcends language. It appears across all communication: awareness posters for both tourists and locals around airports, hotels, transport; throughout the UI of the app; and in physical touchpoints such as charging stands in zoned areas and vinyl window stickers highlighting StepSavvy verified places.
